"once upon a time, way way back in October 1994, rob mclennan & James Spyker invented a two-day event called the ottawa small press book fair, and held the first one at the National Archives of Canada..." Spyker moved to Toronto soon after our original event, but the fair continues, thanks in part to the help of generous volunteers, various writers and publishers, and the public for coming out to participate with alla their love and their dollars.

General info:

admission free to the public.

$20 for exhibitors, full tables
$10 for half-tables
(payable to rob mclennan [NOTE NEW ADDRESS], c/o 402 McLeod St #3, Ottawa ON K2P 1A6;

send by June 15 if you would like to appear in the exhibitor catalogue.

note: for the sake of increased demand, we are now offering half tables.
for catalog, exhibitors should send name of press,address, email, web address, contact person, type of publications, list of publications (with price), if submissions are being considered & any other pertinent info, including upcoming ottawa-area events (if any).

& don't forget the pre-fair reading usually held the night before, info tba! also,

Leo Brent Robillard’s most recent novel is entitled, Drift. Set in South Africa during the Second Boer War, it raises questions about why and how we come to fight wars in far flung places – be it in defense of ideals or in quest for economic gain. These issues – all too relevant today -- are handled intimately through the journey of two prairie boys, an Australian nurse, and a South African balloonist, as they drift together in the blast furnace of the Great Karoo. Robillard is also the author of Leaving Wyoming and Houdini’s Shadow. The former was listed in Bartley’s Top Five in the Globe & Mail for Best First Fiction of 2005. The latter was eventually translated into Spanish. His work has appeared in numerous magazines, journals and anthologies at home and abroad, including CV2, The Fiddlehead, Grain, Prairie Fire, Queen’s Quarterly, and Verge. He lives on Lake Eloida in south-eastern Ontario with his wife and two children. www.leobrentrobillard.blogspot.com

Nicholas Lea published his first book Everything is movies (Chaudiere Books, Ottawa) to acclaim in 2007. Reviews of his work have appeared in the Ottawa Xpress, Matrix Magazine, Prairie Fire and The Globe & Mail Online. He has served as a poetry reader for Bywords.ca as well as The Fiddlehead. He lives in Ottawa where he is currently working on his second collection of poetry. He launches a new chapbook with Andrew Faulkner and Leigh Nash's The Emergency Response Unit.

Lillian Necakov has been writing and publishing for over 30 years. Her work has appeared in publications in Canada, the United States, China and Serbia. She is the author of Sickbed of Dogs, Wolsak and Wynn, 1989, Polaroids, Coach House Books, 1997, Hat Trick, Exile Editions, 1998 and The Bone Broker, Mansfield Press, 2007. She was the editor of the very small press Surrealist Poets Gardening Assoc. for a bunch of years. During the 80’s she sold her books on the streets of Toronto and was one of the subjects of the documentary film “Street Writers, Lucky to be Here”. Lillian runs the Boneshaker Reading Series. She lives and works in Toronto.

The 3rd annual Kingston Zine Fair, Saturday October 29, 2011

The third annual Kingston Zine Fair will take place on Saturday, October 29, from 11 AM to 5 PM. Once again, the venue is the Artel, 205 Sydenham St, Kingston. Table prices are $6 for a half-table, and $10 for a full table. Music will be provided by CFRC djs. If you are interested in taking part this year, please reply ASAP to ensure your place.

This year, there will also be a pre-Zine Fair event on Friday, October 28, at the Grad Club, 162-163 Barrie St., Kingston. This will be held courtesy of the Midnight Magic Rodeo Show, and will feature live music and readings. Cloverfield Literary Festival of Authors

Cloverfield Literary Festival of Authors (CLFA) will be held in VERY LATE October 2010 at The Ossington in Toronto. "We hope to avoid past disasters related to this festival such as in 2008," says publicist Leah McMillan. At press time rumoured readers include Lindsay Tipping, Evie Christie, Spencer Gordon of Ferno House Fame, Angela Hibbs (local poetry fanatic and author of Wanton) and Ewan Whyte who will be trained in the art of the brief reading.

And the enigmatic Christine Estima has confirmed her appearance.

"We can't confirm any of these people yet, as we are awaiting some important information via Friendster," McMillan says. "All we can guarantee is that this will be a very dangerous literary event. We're putting the danger back in literature."

Other rumoured appearances include the 2009 Indie Writers Deathmatch champion herself Natalie Pendergast.

There will be costumes and halloween type fun.

Really excited to announce the next Toronto Small Press Book Fair will be Saturday, June 19, 2010, at the lovely historic Great Hall (1087 Queen Street West). The Fair will be free to the public & run 11am to 5pm.

Participants' full tables cost a low $30. and half-tables are (logically enough) $15.

We're currently getting our website remodeled, so the pdf registration form isn't up there yet. Crowd Control Sound & Art Fair - Halifax NS

This spring the Obey Convention will once again present a special celebration of DIY culture. We are inviting local and travelling record labels, zine makers, small press book makers, screen printers, and other talented folks to show off their wares at the North St. Church on May 29th. Besides lots of tablers, the event will also include DJs from CKDU and all kinds of live music. The fair is absolutely free to the public, so we expect big crowds. Calgary Blow-Out to include Independent Press & Arts Fair!

filling Station, NoD, and CJSW present the 5th annual Calgary Blow-Out, held July 2 at Pages Books on Kensington and July 3 & 4 at Arrata Opera Centre in downtown Calgary.

This festival of innovative & original literature & art in its 5th year is bigger than ever! There are 7 events including two magazine launches, poetry and fiction readings, performance art, independent short film, two Exploding Concerts, and our first ever Blow-Out Art Show & Sale; for a complete listing, see calgaryblowout.blogspot.com

We're also expanding last year's inaugeral book fair into the Independent Press & Arts Fair. Micropress, small press, and artists producing art objets, artful handicrafts, and other smaller pieces will fill Arrata Opera Centre from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The events overlaps with the aforementioned Art Show & Sale's reception held from 1-4 pm. Fair vendors are welcome to enjoy the reception which includes music and refreshments.

Nathaniel G. Moore is the author of the humour
sports book Bowlbrawl (Conundrum, 2005) and the
poetry collection Let's Pretend We Never Met
(Pedlar Press, 2007) He recently co-edited the
critically acclaimed anthology Toronto Noir
(Akashic, 2008) and is currently working on two
fiction projects. He is an editor at both Danforth
Review and Broken Pencil Magazine. His blog of
literature and fashion and music gossip is

Although he grew up grudgingly in Kingston,
Sean Moreland has been an Ottawa resident for the
past ten years. He is currently a doctoral
candidate and literature instructor at the
University of Ottawa, where his morbid preoccupations
are tolerated, if not outright encouraged. He won
the John Newlove Poetry Award in 2007, run by
Bywords, and recently had
his poetry chapbook as part of the same.
 
Kera Willis is a local writer, artist, and musician.
Her first book of
poetry, Tenebrismo, was published by Greyweathers
Press in 2007. As the
creative genius behind Blue Riot Gifts, she creates
and sells unique handmade treasures inspired by
recycled materials and the written word.

Stacey May Fowles' writing has appeared in various
online and print magazines, including Kiss Machine, 
the Absinthe Literary Review, Fireweed, and subTERRAIN.
Her work has been widely anthologized in books including
Nobody Passes: Rejecting The Rules of Gender and
Conformity, First Person
Queer, Yes Means Yes, and I.V. Lounge Nights. Her
first novel, Be Good,
was published by Tightrope Books in 2007, and This
Magazine called it
"probably the most finely realized small press novel
to come out of Canada
in the last year." In fall 2008 she released an
illustrated novel titled
Fear of Fighting, and staged a theatrical adaptation
of the book with Nightwood Theatre. She currently lives
in Toronto and is the publisher of Shameless Magazine.
 
Andrew Faulkner is pursuing his MFA in Creative Writing
at the University of Guelph. He is a co-founder and
former editor-in-chief of Ottawa Arts Review and is also
on the selection committee for Bywords. He is the
author of the chapbook Useful Knots and How to Tie Them 
(2008) and the co-author of Basement Tapes (2007), a
chapbook of poetry and homo-linguistic
translations, with Nicholas Lea and Marcus McCann. He
is a co-founder of The
Emergency Response Unit, a Toronto-based chapbook press.

The Fall Small Press Affair Mini-Fair (Nov 1, 2008)

Because many of you wanted a press fair with a boisterous, party atmosphere, the fall "Small Press Affair" is now going to be an evening mini-fair with entertainment celebrating the sparkling spirit of independent press.

A limited number of tables will be available at the Tranzac Club, so you can sell your wares, network and exchange ideas, while you enjoy readings, music and more.

The spring fair, which is slated for May 30, 2009 at the Miles Nadal JCC, will again be full-fledged daytime event with space for a larger number of tables and a separate room for readings. We’re hoping that one (or perhaps even both) of these two different events will suit the style and needs of your press.

A downloadable registration form will be on-line shortly. Due to limited table space, it’s important that you send in your form as soon as you can.

As a part of this year's Blow-Out! festival, we are going to have a small press fair. This fair gives independent and small presses in Calgary ( and beyond) an opportunity to show off and sell their wares. You are welcome to bring your own table, or, if you'd prefer, tables will rent for $10 a piece. Any interested artists, writers, or publishers can purchase a table for the day for $10 to sell and promote their product. There are still a few tables left to be booked.

Submissions can include: artist multiples, artist books, comics, zines, books/livres, lit mags, chapbooks, indie publishers, micro and small presses.

Gallery Connexion's membership will have access to sell one or two items on a shared membership table free of charge. Contact the gallery to confirm your participation and the items you wish to include. Your participation may be required to work the table for an hour or so.

So far we have The Fiddlehead, AB Publishing, and Broken Jaw Press participating from Fredericton, and EyeLevel Gallery, Anchor Archives, and S.A.G.S.R.I from Halifax.

Admission is free.

General info: the ottawa small press book fair noon to 5pm (opens at 11am for exhibitors)

admission free to the public.
$20 for exhibitors (payable to rob mclennan, c/o 858 Somerset St W, main floor, Ottawa Ontario K1R 6R7). full tables only. for catalog, exhibitors should send (on paper, not email name of press, address, email, web address, contact person, type of publications, list of publications (with price), if submissions are being considered & any other pertinent info, including upcoming ottawa-area events (if any). also, due to the increased demand for table space, exhibitors are asked to confirm far earlier than usual. i.e. -- before, say, the day of the fair.

the fair usually contains exhibitors with poetry books, novels, cookbooks, posters, t-shirts, graphic novels, comic books, magazines, scraps of paper, gum-ball machines with poems, 2x4s with text, etc. happens twice a year, started in 1994 by rob mclennan & James Spyker. now run by rob mclennan thru span-o. questions, az421@freenet.carleton.ca

The 2nd Annual Saskatoon Anarchist Book-Fair is coming, and we need vendors, workshop facilitators, and volunteers!

The dates have been set as September 28th and 29th, 2007 at the Cosmo Senior Citizen's Centre off Broadway, with a potluck supper on Friday the 28th to welcome out-of-towners followed by a party with live music, and a jam-packed day of book-fair from 10 am to 10 pm on Saturday the 29th. (No fair on Sunday)

The event will be wheel-chair accessible and all ages, with free admission, free vegan food, free workshops, and free child-care. Donations will be accepted at the door to recoup expenses. If you run a distro, store, collective, or other organization and would like to register a table to distribute your anarchy-related wares, please try to confirm with us before September 10th. Tables are free; however we encourage donations from vendors that profit from the fair to help pay the bills. If you are travelling from afar, let us know ASAP if you need a billet (how many people, any allergies, any lifestyle or bedding preferences) and feel free to ask us about travel subsidies. Also, please let us know approximately how much table space (square metres) you would like. Interested parties ask us about adding a non-compulsory $1 Tree Tax to prices of print materials that we will donate to an appropriate conservation or reforestation organization (to be determined – any suggestions?) after the fair.

If you want to lead a free workshop, please get in touch! We are especially looking for creative and unusual workshop ideas that build community, share useful skills, are inclusive, and that deal with any of the following: aboriginal justice, food, community organizing, consensus facilitation, queer/LGBT issues, feminism, age-ism, social justice, class struggle, pacifism, armed resistance, permaculture, alternative energy, reducing consumption, green technology, mental health, science, spirituality, history/herstory, anarchy in practice/anarchy defined, political theory, media, language, etc. We can supply electrical outlets, white-boards/flip-charts, chairs, tables, pens/paper, and quiet space – let us know what you need. The workshop schedule will be finalized in September, but let us know right away about any scheduling constraints on the 29th. Deadline for workshop submissions: September 10th.

If you want to volunteer a couple hours to help out before or during this fun and busy day, we need you! Let us know before-hand what you enjoy most: childcare, cooking, cleaning, set-up, take-down, transporting items by bike or car, planning, or promotion, OR just show up on the day and ask someone what needs to be done. All contributing efforts are highly valued, and we encourage drop-in visitors to take a shift washing dishes, sweeping, or moving tables to lighten the workload for everyone.

For everyone who has sent me the link, I don’t have the Hamilton Small Press Fair listed here because the organizers claim they aren’t planning another one anytime soon. Also, it's been suggested that I include American fairs on same; I think that would be a massive undertaking & I'd worry about it taking over this site; why not have someone out there compile all the American in one place & I'll include a link to that?

Aiming for end of August to set up the date for the next Ottawa fair, probably the end of October or near-beginning of November. Anyone else have a sense of their dates, so I don’t manage to conflict?
